I think we should stop pursuing economic growth as some sort of primary national goal. the left and in particularly the green party has it right - to try to think as holistically as possibly so the the flows in and out of the economy are balanced, etc. At the moment, neoliberal domination of our political economy totally ignores trade imbalance...
...which to a green party minded person perhaps reminds of the loss of soil run off into the seas whilst we desperately try to maintain and raise crop production. Green economics is holistic and better and long term, and the left in general I think gets this too.
